Being a Deuteronomy 6 Parent
by Judi Hoefs
“Fifty years from now it will not matter what kind of car you drove, what kind of house you lived in, how much you had in your bank account, or what your clothes looked like. But the world may be a little better because you were important in the life of a child” --Anonymous
I have this saying on a plaque in my office and also on a coffee cup. It is an awesome reminder of how our every action affects the children in our lives. We can be a positive influence, or a negative influence. In July we think of our freedoms and the many heroes who fought for these freedoms. A hero is a person of great courage and dignity, who is admired for his daring and risky achievements. A hero is someone we respect and try to emulate.
Children are always searching for the perfect hero to pattern their life after, and in almost all homes it is the parents and/or grandparents that children emulate.
Parents are you heroes to your children? The best way to become a hero is to give of yourself. The lifestyle you model daily is more powerful than what you say. This is precisely what Proverbs 6:20 says, “My son, observe the commandments of your father…” God intends for kids to find their true heroes in their own families.
Be a spiritual hero to your kids!
