Adult ESL Class

Publications — Mar 31, 2017

We are introducing a 7-week Adult ESL Program on Wednesdays from 12:00-1:30 pm that will focus on conversational English starting April 19. With 39.4% of Irvine’s residents being foreign-born, this class is an opportunity to reach out to our community and “… proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15) from our own backyard.

If you’ve ever taken a grammar final in school, then you know how utterly ridiculous the English language can be. Most English classes only cover the structure of our complicated language with a focus on formal reading and writing. While this is important, our program is meant to be a supplement to classes that most students already take at adult schools through the state programs. We will focus on teaching the practical application of the language in everyday life. Instead of dissecting sentences, we will use topics of American culture and Bible stories to practice conversation and teach them the “ins and outs” of life in Orange County.

First we will start as a large group, where all the students are together regardless of proficiency learning a certain theme, for example, Easter. During this time, we will discuss the traditions of egg hunts and the Easter bunny, but also the religious meaning behind the holiday. After the presentation, the students will be able to ask questions if they want to learn more about the traditions or need to go over parts of the topic; but this time will also be used as a pseudo-Socratic seminar where the questions and answers will be reiterated to engage the students and improve their speaking skills. Once the lecture portion has been completed, students will be grouped together by their level of skill, and volunteers will guide the conversation based on a new theme relevant to students’ needs (e.g. new students might learn basic greetings, while more advanced students might learn how to order at a restaurant.)

Ultimately, our program will not only provide additional practice for those seeking to improve their English, but also introduce non-English speakers to a Christian community and the love of Christ by facilitating conversations and opportunities to share the good news of the Gospel.
